Office 2007 launches tonight!

Well, the festivities in New York City have begun, and culminating at midnight tonight, Windows Vista and 2007 Microsoft Office System will be available for general release. You'll be able to get these two products everywhere--amazon.com, all your favorite electronics/software stores, but most importantly (and more easily), you can download them directly from Microsoft's Windows Marketplace! I'm sure the items won't go on sale til midnight, but we're getting close now.

If you'd like to see Bill Gates unveil the products in Times Square, catch the keynote, or see photos from the events, click here.

The BlogOffice Channel: Word 2007 Document Makeovers!

Are you wondering how Word 2007 will be able to help you pep up dreary documents, save you time and effort, and just in general make your work look a whole lot better than it does now? I invite you to send in a tired, overworked document (nothing confidential or proprietary, please) and treat it to a Word 2007 makeover. I'll use the documents I receive as case studies and post the before and after here, along with the steps in the makeover process.

Just click add a comment on this post telling me you have a document you'd like to send in, and I'll email you the directions. Fun stuff!

Sometimes it's the little things...

My dad emailed today asking a question about Excel that seems simple, but it's one of those little things that can drive you crazy. If you've hidden a column in an Excel chart, where's the tool that enables you to unhide it? How can you select it once it's gone? What do you do to get it back?

I knew this one because once upon a time I went searching for the same solution in a panic after I'd hidden a couple of vitally important columns in a spreadsheet. I was rushing to meet a deadline and couldn't remember how to get the columns back. Just in case you ever experience that same kind of mind-blanking adrenalin rush, here are the steps:

Simple, but important. The line between visible and invisible is very thin. :)

Show Microsoft Your "Wow"

In preparation for the consumer launch of Windows Vista (and Microsoft Office 2007), Microsoft has launched the "Show us your 'Wow'" campaign. The campaign is a competition that enables you to share your favorite moments (BillG defines a Wow moment as a moment you knew everything had changed) through photos, art, music, or video. Click here to go to the Show Us Your Wow page and see the moments that have already been submitted. Bill Gates went first to show us all how it's done.

If you submit a Wow moment, add a comment here so we'll all know to go check it out!

Avoid time-out issues with Office 2007

The new year brought Microsoft a couple of unpleasant surprises--the betas of Microsoft Expression and Microsoft Windows Defender timed out, which means the software wouldn't load and users faced the option of resetting their system clocks to 2006 or waiting for the patch to fix the problem. In a smart move to circumvent that kind of problem, the Microsoft Office group sent a message reminding beta users of the various time-out dates:

  • If you're using 2007 Office beta 2 release with no update: 02/01/2007

  • If you're using 2007 Office beta 2 release updated with the beta 2 technical refresh: 03/31/2007

  • If you're using 2007 Office beta 2 release server products updated with the beta 2 technical refresh: 05/15/2007

If you are using one of the products on the list, be sure to backup and uninstall (or upgrade) your software before the end date. You'll be able to find more information on Microsoft Office Online.

If you still haven't tried Office 2007, you can sign up for a 30-day trial at Microsoft Office Online. The big release is just a couple of weeks away.
