Peace on Earth

It's about 10 minutes til midnight here in Indianapolis...the snow has been falling for hours and all the streets and cars and lawns and roofs are buried. They say we'll have 8 inches by morning. The kids are tucked in bed, the dog is snoring on the rug by my feet, and all is well. Santa will be here soon. What's that got to do with Office XP? Absolutely nothing. Isn't that wonderful? Happy holidays, everyone! :) k

A Minor Oops

You know that great feature in Outlook (earlier versions too, not just XP) that fills in the recipient's name for you when you type a letter or two in the To: box? A word of advice: Check it carefully before you send. Working fast to make a deadline, I sent a chapter to John in San Francisco and it wound up in my brother John's Inbox in Oregon. Thank goodness he isn't that interested in my writing...on the phone, he said, "You didn't mean for me to read this, did you?" Otherwise, I wouldn't have known the chapter missed its mark by several hundred miles. And sooner or later I would have had one steamed editor.

The moral: Make sure your financial projections go to Fred the financial guy at the home office and not to Aunt Freida in Patooka. A second look at the To: line should do the trick. :) k

A Pretty Invoice, Please

Well, sales are starting to pop at Homeward Bound Publishing (woo hoo!) and I received a nice big order tonight. I was working with the new book sales database I created and everything was going along nicely until I needed to email an invoice. The first one I emailed to myself by creating the invoice and choosing File > Send To > Mail Recipient. I'm glad I sent it to myself as a test first, because the document completely lost its format even though I selected HTML as the format type. So I tried again, this time displaying the invoice in Access and then right-clicking to display the context menu. I chose Export and then selected Rich Text Format (RTF) as the format most likely to preserve the appearance. When I opened the file, the format was fine, but the logo was missing. Arg. The final fix? I printed the invoice from Access, scanned it using the Scanner and Camera Wizard (in Accessories in Windows XP), and sent it as an attachment to the author who was requesting it. Come on now. There's got to be a better way to get a pretty invoice... :) k

Office Greed

Well, I hope it doesn't turn out to be one of the seven deadly sins (or at least a bad habit), but the more gadgets and gizmos and templates and fun things I add to Office XP, the more I want. Have you heard about OneNote, the create-anywhere-use-in-everything note-taking new utility that lets you store, track, organize, and reuse the notes you take? Heaven! Here's the page giving you a FAQ and even a video to watch, if you're so inclined: Microsoft Office - OneNote Home Page

Long Time, No Blog

Good morning! Here I am on a Saturday trying to catch up on all my blogs. The last two weeks have been a whirlwind. Deadlines, writing, editing...the hits go on and on. I have something fun to report, though: my small press, Homeward Bound Publishing, just released it's second book, The Outta-Work Cookbook! I don't have it on amazon yet, but soon. If you are between jobs (or know someone who is), this book is a fun, man-style guide to doing something constructive in the kitchen while you're looking for work. The author, Mike Malandrakis, is funny, smart, upbeat, and he's been there (outta-work) many times. He's got a lot of heart and just the right way of giving men a friendly "kick in the ass" to get them moving. [And yes, there's plenty of cussing in here...I edited out what I could, but hey--that's Mike.]

Okay, so what's that got to do with Office XP? Nothing, really. :) I do have a new article on microsoft.com, though, called 11 Tips for Creating Tables in Word. That was a fun one to write. I love Word tables. :) [I don't know how long the article has been up there--I just checked the main Office page today and saw my goofy mug peering out at me from the center of the page. I look like I'm inside a dryer at the laundomat. :)]

Have a good weekend, everyone! Next week I'll get back in the saddle with more XP tips and discoveries... :) k
